It's been an uneasy 24 hours. Keenspace experienced a catastrophic crash, and that stupid sapphire virus caused a virus to go down just as they were about to transfer the last files, literally a minute from doing that, so some of the files were lost. According to the admins, "Of the 7300 accounts on Keenspace, 6007 were successfully transferred." You can imagine how anxious I was about MINDMISTRESS---
Especially since I did a dumb thing. In a move from one computer to another, I had purged unnecessary images and files and figured I could restore them later...
So, although I had the original drawings and scripts and everything, I only had the original images of the current storyline. If my account had been lost, all previous stories would have had to been rescanned and recolored by computer.
That wouldn't have necessarily have been a bad thing; I've learned tons of things about how to use both the scanner and the graphic program since I've started, and perhaps it would have been to my advantage...
On the other hand, it would have taken a ton of time.
Add to that I couldn't even get to any Keenspace sites...the new address was being propagated across DNS lines, and thanks to this stupid virus, it was going slower than it should have. I couldn't see Mindmistress...although a few people were kind enough to tell me that they could.
Another thing; we use a dial-up modem, to more accurately judge how long it takes a web page to load with a dial-up modem; designing for the worst connection---besides, it's cheaper...and it would take hours to upload all the images again, even if I had them.
Also, with the death of my old email address, I had evidently and stupidly neglected to update the Keenspace-admin list with my new address...most of them come through Yahoo groups, and I changed those, but not that one...
So I was getting all the information second-hand...
So I was very glad to get the actual new IP addresss this morning...FTP in there...
...And they're all there.
I know, I know, no big deal to you. But I've been working on this stuff. I know my art's not great, but the writing has been getting kudos...someone even recently on the Funny Papers' review site, compared my writing to Alan Moore's! (Yeah, right.)
Anyway, it was a joy to go through it and see I didn't have to redo the whole thing again.....
Even though some of my favorite webcomics appear to be on the list that got deleted, according to one partial list they published. I was lucky. Of course, it was only one in seven who were deleted, and it's a free service, and the admins were working their tails off to get it done for everyone...
And one in seven odds? The odds are one in ten thousand, at least when I had Jamie, of having an autistic child. I've had two.
So...sorry. I'm too relieved to think about anything else right now.
I'm just very, very, very relieved.
Although I'll be more relieved when the stupid DNS gets updated and I can actually see and update things myself. There are two pages out there needing to be updated, and I'm almost finished with a third, and it didn't automatically update at midnight like it was supposed to...
Oops. I'm complaining, aren't I?
I should be thankful.
And I am.
It's true. God does look after idiots.
